Owners at Old Park Wood Holiday Park, on the Holker Estate in Cumbria, have raised £1,065.80 for Kendal Mountain Rescue Team after its volunteers came to the aid of one of the park’s owners.
As Cumbria Crack reported on 18 October 2026, the fundraising was organised after the team rescued one of the park’s owners from Gummers Howe at the end of July. The money was raised at an owners’ event held by the park.
A visit to say thank you
According to the report, team members Dave Pheasey and Neil Davies visited the site to formally thank staff and the community for their support and to receive the donation.
It is a lovely way to close the circle. An owner was helped off the fell in the summer, and a few months later fellow owners came together to give something back to the volunteers who answered the call.
About the team
The team’s own website, under the name Kendal Mountain Search and Rescue Team, explains why support like this matters:
- Always on call. The team says it is on call 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, including Christmas, whatever the weather.
- Volunteers. Every team member is a volunteer. Members train, check equipment and fundraise, all in addition to rescuing people from the hill.
- Funded by donations. The website says the team is funded entirely from donations and that it costs around £50,000 a year to run.
- Since 1953. The team has been searching for and helping people in difficulty since 1953.
The team also reminds people that in an emergency they should dial 999 and ask for Cumbria Police, followed by Mountain Rescue, rather than trying to contact the team through its website. Anyone who would like to follow the owners’ lead can find ways to give on the team’s support us page.
A park with a habit of giving
This is not the first time Old Park Wood owners have rallied round a good cause. The park’s community news page lists earlier fundraising, including over £300 for Riding for the Disabled, proceeds from a fun day for Bay Search and Rescue, a collection for the RSPB and funds raised towards a second defibrillator.
We always enjoy sharing stories like this. Recently we have also covered a St Andrews caravan park raising nearly £7,000 for Chest Heart & Stroke Scotland and owners at Ty Gwyn in Abergele raising almost £4,000 for Dementia UK and the BHF.
